Spider Story – Get a chuckle out of it

So I figured to share this story since my husband got a chuckle out of it.  As I headed home from Chicago, driving away as I listened to music in the car.  I was out on the highway as usual, then suddenly I saw a spider crawling on my windshield!  Big creepy legs moving across so slowly as I freaked out!  I couldn’t tell if it was inside or outside of the car.  So I managed to pull over as I then quickly looking for something to kill it or get it out of my car.  I moved the visor to find it and it was gone! I totally freaked, looking around inside my car where the heck did the spider go???   Then looking on the floor, on myself and then stepped out of the car for two seconds looking around but no luck.  I took a deep breath and got back in the car.  Obviously it disappeared!  Perhaps it was on the outside and not in?   So then buckled up and all, headed back on the road towards home. I never saw the spider again.    Freaky!!

Got any freaky spider stories??

Candy…

So this past weekend I managed to bring home some Fannie May chocolates which were sinful as always.   It got me thinking on what is your favorite candy out there?  I think Fannie May is one of my favorites along with a few others.

So I typed in candy in the google search engine to see what would pop up!  I found this link:

http://www.oldtimecandy.com/

As I scroll down the page…here are some that I have had in the past:  Bubble Gum Cigarettes, Candy Buttons on Tape, Candy Cigarettes, Candy Corn, Candy Necklaces, Chiclets Gum, Chocolate Gold Coins, Coconut Slices, Gum Drops, Gummi Bears, Gummi Worms, Hershey bars, Jelly Belly, Kit Kat, Mr GoodBar, Pastel Party Mints, PB Reese Cups, Peeps, Raisinets, Sixlets, Skittles, Snickers, Spree, Sweettarts, Tootsie Rolls, Turtles, Twizzlers, Watermelon Slices, and Wax Bottles.

I’m sure I could name more if I sat here and thought about it…like M&Ms & Mounds or even Heath Bars.

Fruit slices is always something that sticks out in my head because I would get those once in a while for a special treat.  There’s a local candy store in Iowa City here near the college that has those!  I treat myself to those once in a blue moon!

Then there are the fancy candies like Fannie May, Godiva, Frango Chocolates (Marshall Fields/Macy’s), Russell Stover  and etc…those are so yummy. I”m not a fan of the nut ones, but the creams, chocolates, truffles or caramels..mmm yummy!   Some toffees are good and even the dark chocolates.  🙂

What is your favorite candy??

I typed in Nestle and then somehow ended up finding this kind of chocolate called Maison Cailler:

What is Cued Speech?

Cued Speech Program Book Jan 27-29

Cued Speech is a mode of communication based on the phonemes and properties of traditionally spoken languages. Cueing allows users who are deaf or hard of hearing or who have language/communication disorders to access the basic, fundamental properties of spoken languages through the use of vision.

More information is at the website: http://www.cuedspeech.org/

So I attended the social event called Cues on Tap where everyone hung out and talked.  That was fun. Although I wished I could have stayed downtown to hang out.  Perhaps the next time they have a major seminar about it, I could do it.  Although it depends on a lot of things for me to travel!    (I’m sure I’ve mentioned this in previous posts..sorry if I have!)

Anyways, the next one I sat in was the Panel which had a next generation of parents with their kids going through Cued Speech and all.  I sat there thinking how long ago when my parents did this and so many others that I know of.  It’s neat to see.  Then the 2nd panel was young adult of my age and a bit younger talking about their experience.  Sadly I wasn’t on it.  I don’t know why I wasn’t on it, perhaps the next one.  And my other friend S wasn’t on it either. We both wondered who made the decision on this.  It should have included us and a few others as well.

After this event, I am hoping my husband will finally get to learn to Cue. hehehe   He keeps telling me I have to teach him. Well, whenever I pick a time, he’s either too tired or wants to do something else. Hahaha!  So I told him my hs friend bought dvd set on how to cue again and he was curious on that. So I looked around to find some links and sent them his way.  Hope he had a chance to look today! (He was a tad swamped with work today on a big issue)

Reading at the moment…

At this moment I”m reading a book called Darker Still by Leanna Renee Hieber.  It is so good that every time I’m reading it, I want to read more!   But reality calls for me to go do things and such…I’m about half way through the book.  I cannot wait to see the ending of this book as well.   Will do an update when I’m completely done with the book!

Downtown Trip Take 2

So this afternoon, I decided to head on downtown again for the lectures about Cued Speech and the social aspect!   I got my good friend from high school to come along as she drove down.  The drive was fun but there was lots of traffic.  We weren’t in a rush for we had time.  We both saw all kinds of cars and trucks and buses on our way down.  Somehow the exit we were suppose to get off at was blocked off due to construction, our lovely gps kept telling us to go that way, so we went on an adventure.  We both had an idea where we were going.  Finally after going in the right direction, our lovely gps recalculated and managed to find the hotel – Chicago Hilton off of  S. Michigan Ave.

We drove by my other friend’s apt as we were going to go visit him after we parked in the parking garage.  We got the parking garage as the gate opened up after getting the ticket.  Up the ramp we go.  My friend drove of course and it was quite a narrow ramp. We kept our eyes peeled looking for a spot!  As we reached to level 5, a spot appeared for us.  Parked the car, got out and walked to the elevator and then headed off to my friend’s apt.

Well the sun was out with blue skies but the wind nipped at use while we walked to his place.  Whoo wheee.  I was glad I brought my other coat today with a hood on it.  So we were walking and walking and I”m like this is not what I saw last night so we were one block over from his apt which I had a quick wit about where we were.  Once we got to his place, he had just woken up!  It was so funny.  So up to his place we went as his dog was barking at the door. I had a hunch he didn’t have his hearing aids in.  So we waited a bit until he came to the door.  He then said hello and scooted off to get dressed and all.   Then another friend popped up with someone else as we all walked back to the hotel for the event.

Of course we were all thinking we were going to be late.  Entering the room, the speaker was running late in his presentation but that was okay.  It was fascinating to hear a bit about his findings and all.  The set up was amazing.  It had a Cued Speech transliterator, Sign Language Interpreter and CART up on the screen to read.  Plus the speaker also had a power point prevention as well.  Lots of visuals everywhere!  My eyes kept jumping all over the place to know it all.

When that speaker was done, the panel started. The first group was parents of younger kids that used Cued Speech and how it helped them.  Then the second group was kids who are young adults now that used Cued Speech and still does these days.  It was all fascinating to hear their stories.  Sadly I wasn’t on the panel because I didn’t know about it until the last moment and I was out of town.  Perhaps the next time they host an event like this, I will go.  It all depends on a number of things for me to travel.

Then ti was done for the day.  They had a reception afterwards of wine and cheese which didn’t appeal to me at the moment.  Although there was some socializing going on which I attended to.  It was nice to see some old faces and some new ones.  While I was socializing, my high school friend bought dvd on how to cue.  She is going to give it another shot!  She took Cued Speech classes but then after that was done, I had to move so we really didn’t get a chance to get her to practice more.  So I’m hoping the dvd and whatever else she bought would help her!

Then another thought popped in my mind, isn’t there a place online where we all can keep in touch?  I know Facebook has some and National Association of Cued Speech has their website..but are we all on there together?  Perhaps there is a way so we all can keep in touch with old and new faces on Cued Speech or even what we are doing in life.

I never thought there would be more people out there in the world that use Cued Speech and I’m glad!  It should be known to the world. It should be an option out there for those who want to use it.

For now I must stop for I am tired and I can’t think anymore. Perhaps another entry will be written about this event and all.

Cooper’s Hawk Winery & Restaurant

So tonight after my trip downtown with my good high school friend, we decided we were hungry and wanted to eat closer to home.  Cooper’s Hawk was new to the area and decided to give it a go!   Once we entered the spacious restaurant, there was wine bottles set up for display from white to read to desert wine and so on.  It was a very nice social area.  I spied a bottle that looked so good that I wanted to try it somehow.  First my friend went up to see how long the wait was, they replied 1 hour.  So we decided to stay.   Both of us were starving and hoped the wait would be quicker than 1 hour.  They hostess gave us a buzzer thing as we explored the social area seeing deserts displayed and bottles of wine. We both spied a wine tasting bar.

My first thought was the wine is going to taste all the same to me which was the alcohol!  Every time I have wine, it is too bitter for me or all I can taste is the alcohol.  Straight off the waitress there or wine taster helper was awesome!  Very friendly and nice and informative!  So first I tried the Peach wine..and let met tell you I was in heaven!!!  Oh my god..a wine that I can drink.  It’s sweet and I barely could taste the alcohol.  So yes there is a wine out there for me.  Whoo whoo.  Then my 2nd taste was Blueberry wine as my friend tried it too. She liked it but I didn’t it.  It packed a punch for me somehow. I cannot explain it but gave it a pop in my mouth.  Then the 3rd one was Raspberry wine for myself where I loved the smell of it but the taste was not as good as the Peach.  If I had to rate it what I tasted so far at this point, it would be: 1. Peach, 2. Raspberry,  3. Blueberry….  Then my last one at the wine tasting bar was Peach Sparkling which I did not like at all.   My friend also tried an Almond Sparkling which she liked and then a Moscotio wine.  I wanted to try the plum but our buzzer buzzed!

So off to dinner we went.  Although my friend did sign up for the wine club there. She’s going to give it a few months to see how it goes.  As we checked in at the front desk, our cute waiter who was a redhead took us to tour table.  The place is spacious and modern.  As we sat down, we were handed these huge menus that had an amazing descriptions of the food!  Great thing to see.  The menu was very nice.  Our waitress explained a few things from the menu.  If you see a feather by it, it’s a chef speciality and if you see like BIF 67 or something like that then it’s a wine that would be great to have with the meal.

I did ask the waitress if I could try the Plum wine.  Yes I had 2 free samples and then ordered some Plum wine with my meal.  My friend ordered a steak with broccoli and mashed potatoes. Myself I ordered a chicken with asparagus, mashed potatoes, artichokes and then the sauce was amazing.  Our plates were huge and the food was hot and yummy.  Although both our vegetables (broccoli and asparagus) were both a bit crunchy.   Plus we did get some bread which had a pretzel taste to it, was hot, nice and yummy.   We also both had water with dinner tonight as well.

While we were leaving I wondered if they had any mini wine bottles that I could take home. Sadly they don’t.  I was going to get one for my brother’s girlfriend to see if she liked it or not.   Then my friend who got a wine club membership, purchased a Peach Wine bottle and gave it to me since I live out of town. That was awesome of her!  So now I have to drink wine.

My friend and I would go to this place again!   It was fun to hang out and test out some wines together and chat til we had to eat.  Great food, great fun.
